Dunedin

Dunedin (population 120,000), attractively situated at the head of Otago Harbour, is the main centre of the Otago region and has a strong Scottish background.  The city, with a strong educational, artistic and cultural tradition, is home to the University of Otago – with its vibrant student life – and has excellent museums, art galleries, theatres, concert halls and cinemas, all centrally located.  Especially notable cultural attractions include the gracious stately home – Olveston, and the awe-inspiring Larnach Castle.  There are numerous parks, a fine Botanic Garden and the green town belt within walking distance of the city centre.  Also easily accessible are many sporting grounds, golf courses and a well-equipped indoor pool.  There are numerous places to eat out in Dunedin, from modestly-priced family restaurants to more expensive dining places.  The nearby Otago Peninsula is renowned for its scenic attractions, impressive coast and abundant wildlife including seals, penguins and albatrosses.
